Recognising the Signs of Problem Gaming
Ask yourself these questions to understand whether online gaming is becoming a problem. If any of the following signs appear, it is important to take notice:
- You are betting beyond your budget and repeatedly returning to try to recover lost money.
- You are hiding your gaming habits from family or friends, or lying about them.
- You feel irritable, anxious, or restless when you are unable to play.
- You are neglecting work, studies, or family responsibilities to play.
- You are taking on debt or cutting unnecessary expenses to fund your gaming.
- Your repeated attempts to stop gaming have not succeeded.
The Golden Rules of Healthy Gaming
Responsible gaming means following a few simple rules:
- Set a fixed budget before you start gaming and only spend that amount.
- See gaming as entertainment, not a source of income.
- Do not play when you are in an unbalanced emotional state (after anger, sadness, or drinking).
- Do not play beyond a set time limit — take breaks and spend time with your family.
- Do not place more bets in an attempt to recover money you have lost.
- Regularly review your account limits and time-out features.
- If needed, let someone you trust know about your gaming habits.
